I usually say that Art School in Budapest is so new that it is still in diapers and in the same time, thinking that this March it celebrates it’s first birthday makes my heart sing. You see, no matter what others had told me, I somehow have always managed to believed that dreams can come true. This is how I chose the somewhat unpredictable path of an artist and this is how the dream of Art School in Budapest was born a year and a half ago.

The idea of starting a school came out of my needs: my deep wish to share my knowledge and passion for art and nonviolent communication, to have a job which will be fun and give a lot meaning to my life and a job which will provide me with opportunities to grow and develop as a person, a teacher and an artist. How did it go? Is my school a success? I do not know. Maybe it is better if you judge about the success. All I know is that I witnessed so much beauty in watching my students open up creatively and develop artistically, that it has been a lot of fun and learning for me and I that I am a more enriched person now than what I was a year ago. And this is what makes me get up from my bed every morning.

I find it important to remember that I have not been alone working on this dream come true. I am overwhelmed with gratitude thinking about all of you who helped me get to where I am right now. Thank you for your unselfish professional advices – they were a big learning and support. Thank you for introducing my school to your friends, communities and clubs - I experience it as your care and love. Thank you for expressing what your needs were and for giving me your genuine feedback– it heeled my trust in honesty of people and it supported my growth. And above all, thank you for finding love in your hearts to accept my mistakes and voulnerability – it strengthened my believe that in order to learn, teach or run a school we all can put away shields and role-playing and simply be ourselves. Thank you all for supporting my vision that learning and teaching can be a personal, meaningful and in the same time a fun activity and so reinforcing my hope that schools could become part of the change we would like to see happen in this world.

I Learned to Enjoy The Process of Creating

S.E. was attending Studio Drawing and Painting lessonsns during the fall term. Here is what she says about her experience of the course :

"I came across ASIB on the Internet at the end of the summer when I tried to find art classes in English for my American husband (I am from Hungary). I did not even hope there would be any, but thanks to Barbara there are! In the autumn I started to attend the classes with my husband to gain back my long forgotten art skills.

At the first lesson we observed that the lines are alive... and they have emotions, they may be sad, happy, bored or hopeful... Then we learnt how to answer the big question, how you are supposed to hold your drawing-paper, horizontally or vertically. (That is called composition in art circles.)

Then we learned how to draw cubes, fortunately disguised as old suitcases and tea boxes. Working by music we practised how to depict perspective, how to measure angles and proportions, how to shade, and how to hide the bacground and emphasize the foreground. Our efforts produced their fruits in the form of a detailed still life in charcoal that we spent a few weeks working on.

In the course of time we worked in pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, brush and ink and even some colorful oil pastel. (It was interesting to see how to stain your cloths in a tasteful way using different media.)

My favourite exercise was to draw little sketches during one or two minutes of objects or of each other. Because of lack of time one has to concentrate on the essence of the sight and you do not think so much, but just let your hands draw the lines.

At every occasion Barbara waited for us with snacks and hot tea and candle light on a well-laid table so we always started the lessons in a jolly and relaxed atmosphere. (The taste and fragrance of jasmin tea will remind me of her art classes henceforth.)

The drawing lessons at ASIB with Barbara`s tactful and expert corrections and interesting exercises helped me to stop judging myself negatively while drawing. Thus I learned to enjoy the process of creating. The classes were a period of peace for me in my busy life and I managed to open up my own creativity. The presence of likeminded students was also useful and it was inspiring to work together.

I suggest this course with all my heart to people who want to improve their drawing skills or start learning from any level, who want to discover their talents, who want to dig into their psyche more deeply and last but not least who like to have a good time! "

While you may be still in the winter mode awiating the first serious snow fall in Budapest, at Art School in Budapest we are already in springtime mood! The new (spring) term is starting on January 24^th offering 4 diferent 16 + 1 week courses in contemporary art, ceativity development and drawing and painting and a 8 week Studio Drawing and Painting course (from Jan.7) . But just before the new term gets into a full swing, you are invited to come to Open Days at ASiB, try out a selection of free lessons and see which courses suit your interests and needs the best. Open Days event ends with screening of Julian Schnabel's film "Basquiate". (to read what did former ASiB students say about their experience at the school click here)

Svetlana Sapelova was one of the first students who applied to the FLOW course  after ASiB was founded in March 2011.  She attended the course for several months untill she had to leave Hungary to continue her studies. Here is what she says about her experience of the FLOW course and the impact it made on her life.

  "I was a student in Art School in Budapest for one semester which was full of pleasant suprises. I applied for  FLOW  because I was lacking art in my life and was looking for opportunities to try something new, and in the same time I didn't have any idea how to start or if I'm able to do something creative.

    This course is really perfect for those who feel like having some potential to do art or to create something but they don't have any skills, knowledge, practice in this field. That was my case. Being an IT person I thought I was completely skill-less and unimaginative to do any kind of art so I chose the course which didn't require any special art abilities to start. And the time of my studies was perfect. Due to Barbara's individual approach to students and friendly and  relaxing atmosphere I got perfect results. I found out I wasn't that incapable as I had considered before: I just had some blocks which didn't allow me to start being creative, and this course helped me to get rid of them.

    When you stop thinking about the results or  someone's opinion about your work, and just listen to yourself and  "let it go" you get the best result and discover that apparently you have a lot of skills to do art, they just needed to be released. You know how to be creative, you just need to ask yourself and this is the point of the course: to help people to start listen to themselfs and release their creativity. I may say I did  it, and what is more suprising is that this knowledge help me not only to do art but in my work, studies and even everyday life as well. I'm sure that if you stop getting  worried about the result and ask yourself what is the best way to do things you will find the best answer and get the best result. That is the point of creativity. "

The Best Gift You Can Unwrap This December

   Few years ago I spent my winter in Northern Finland. Despite my original fear of getting depressed because of the cold weather and kaamos (days with hardly any daylight), it actually turned to be one of the greatest experiences of my life. I cannot say that a grandiose event happened to me that winter, nor that I met a person who influenced me greatly. What happened to me was that I simply allowed myself to slow down and listen - listen to other people and to the fine movements of my own soul. I unwraped many gifts that winter: I learned that the way to survive winter is to live with it instead of going against it , that it is not the weather that is cold but that I was not dressed worm enough and that burning one little candle on a dark winter day can actually be enough to make me feel good. But the best gift I 'unwrapped' on Christmas that year was myself , being able to hear myself inside and feel whole again.

December always brings these memories to me, and I hope that this winter you will be able to 'unwrap' yourself too while taking part at some of new interesting events at ASiB. Whether you feel completely lost in a museum of contemporary arts wishing to understand what artists of today are trying to say or simply are an art lover interested in expanding your knowledge, this lecture is meant for you. The 3 interesting lectures in one evening with the active engagement of the audience and interesting film segments will offer a scope to how making and understanding art evolved from the 19t century to the present days. It will show you how paradigm shift as well as some social and technological changes shaped the formation of art we have today. These three lectures are also an introductory to Weekly Contemporary and ARS MODO  courses. In case you are interested, after attending them you will be ready to join these two courses.

"Experiencing The 2011 Venice Biennale"

In the begging of November this year I made study trip to Italy to see the 54th Venice Biennale, one of the two most important international contemporary arts exhibitions in Europe. In this lecture I will be happy to share with you my personal impressions about the exhibition and to present you a selection of the documentation (pictures and videos) I have made there. Whether you missed to see the biennale this year or have never been to one, this lecture is for you.

Pikkujoulu -Little Christmas Party

Pikku Joulu is a Finnish expression literary meaning little Christmas. It is a name for parties Finns like to give in the time before Christmas. Beside mulled wine and yumee cookies, this little party at ASiB will be spiced up with fun artistic activities and a game I learned at my first pukkijoulu party in Finland. You are most welcome and pleae feel free to bring an art loving friend too.

1) slippers or worm socks (you will be asked to take off your shoes and maybe sitting on the floor)
2) some vegetarian food, snacks and/or drinks
3) two or more small present for the Pikkujouly game. The present should not be very expensive and if you are creative feel free to make something yourself. If possible keep the presents eather hand made or art related , to keep the spirit of the school. Please remember to wrap your presents at home. It is important for the game that none knows what is inside the package.

Fall with gloomy clouds and boring rains has finally arrived to Budapest, but at Art School in Budapest we keep the rainbow mood.

This November two new 6 weeks long courses are starting: Studio Drawing on Wednesday mornings and FLOW on Thursday early afternoon. Beside this you may consider joining some of the regular weekly courses straight after the mid term break. Please find more information below.

· 6 weeks STUDIO DRAWING course starting November 9, 2011 .

Lessons will be on Wednesdays (November 9 - December 14. ) from 9.30 -12h. This course is for anyone age 17 who is interested in a more traditional knowledge of drawing. In this course you learn to draw what you see accurately, your sight and sense of composition will develop, and you will be introduced to techniques such as pencil, charcoal and pen and ink. Students of different pre-knowledge, experience and interests are welcome to this course.

Enthusiasm for the things we feel passionate about can be contagious.

For quite a while, I have been passionate about both contemporary art and nonviolent communication (NVC). My whole school: the courses, the structure and the way of teaching are inspired by these two passions of mine.

And this fall I wish to expand my dream to a wider audience. On the weekend of October 22-23 Art School in Budapest will be offering a series of exciting workshops and lectures about Art and nonviolent communication. You are warmly welcome to join any of them.

After the opening party which marked the begining of the new school year , I am excited to share the latest news about the school with you.

Course Selection: This year ASiB is offering six different weekly courses for adults, children and teens. Whether you are a professional artist, someone planning to apply to an art school abroad or simply a "layman" with a personal interest in understanding contempoarary art, adding to your skills, ceativity, self expression or your enjoyment of life, I invite you to browse through the weekly course selections for a course to match your interest. Apply: With a growing interest in the courses and returning students and , my vision that learning art can be an exciting, meaningful and self-fulfilling voyage is being reinforced. What is Nonviolent Communication (NVC)?

New academic year at Art School in Budapest is approaching. While being busy with preparations and planning of the courses, I thought that saying a few words about what nonviolent communication is might give an insight into the basic principles of the school. The text below is adopted from the official web site of The Center for Nonviolent Communication ( www.cnvc.org )

NVC begins by assuming that we are all compassionate by nature. It also assumes that we all share the same, basic human needs, and that each of our actions are a strategy to meet one or more of these needs. With NVC we learn to hear our own deeper needs and those of others. Through its emphasis on deep listening—to ourselves as well as others—NVC helps us discover the depth of our own compassion. This language reveals the awareness that all human beings are only trying to honor universal values and needs, every minute, every day.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is based on the principles of nonviolence- the natural state of compassion when no violence is present in the heart. It reminds us what we already instinctively know about how good it feels to authentically connect to another human being.

The form is simple, yet powerfully transformative

Through the practice of NVC, we can learn to clarify what we are observing, what emotions we are feeling, what values we want to live by, and what we want to ask of ourselves and others. We will no longer need to use the language of blame, judgment or domination and we can experience the deep pleasure of contributing to each others' well being.

People who practice NVC have found greater authenticity in their communication, increased understanding, deepening connection and conflict resolution.

The NVC community is active in over 65 countries around the globe.

"I had been looking for a long time for a place like this art school. Having lived in 3 different countries in the past 3 years, really made me feel the need to express myself creatively and put down in more than words everything I have lived and felt throughout this time. In Budapest I finally found that place where I go every week and just let my feelings flow side by side with my imagination.

The good energy of the school, the big smiles I always get when I arrive, the opportunity to share experiences but also jump personal obstacles on concentration and mind-sets: all this together has made my 3 weekly hours spent at the school with my teacher Barbara Guttmann and my colleagues an amazing experience which has enriched me and helped me get over a time of intense self healing and self comprehension.

Things in life somtimes happen easily! After my first email advertisment of ASB, a very kind lady , who introduced herself as an interieur designer, called me on the phone. She was not interested in taking one of te courses in my school but actually suggested to meet and see if we could work together. In the following weeks we met and talked and discussed and brainstormed and inspiered each other and voila! The Space Mill Workshop, an exciting one day course with Kata Trom (interior designer - art historian) and me, Barbara Guttman (artist - art educator - owner of the Art School in Budapest) was born.

If you choose to spend a day of your weekend with Kata and me, you will be encouraged to develop your sensitivity and understanding of space and interiors through interesting lectures about arts and design and fun practical exercises. Free Flowing

A small art school in the heart of the 7th district, based on principles of non-violent communication is offering a variety of art courses – and not juts for aspiring pros! We took part in a Flow Training to unleash our hidden creativity. Here’s how it worked out.

The tiny school is led by artist Barbara Guttman, who’s been living in Budapest for over eight years and is currently working on her PhD at the University of Pécs. In her school Barbara offers a wide range of courses: kids’ courses, Ars Modocourses to help young people applying to art schools, theWeekly Contemporary, a theoretical course on what contemporary art is all about, Studio Drawing and Painting courses – and the Flow course. The term refers to a psychological concept coined by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, describing the feeling of completely focused motivation one feels when fully immersed in an activity. The course is said to be for everyone regardless of age, skills or talent, with the sole aim to awaken participants’ sleeping creativity and to re-create the joy of self-expression. As the process of self-discovery is always a very intimate one, the course works with small groups of 4-8 people.

We head to the art school on a sunny morning in early spring. Being a bit early we chat to Barbara, she tells us about her other passion besides arts: non-violent communication. It’s a process of communication with the main focus on honest self-expression and compassionate connection to others. This type of communication has helped her improving the quality of her teaching, Barbara tells us. One of her principles: first connection, then teaching.

A couple of girls arrive, we sit in a circle on the floor, Barbara rings a bell – the class begins. A quick round of introduction: most of the participants are expats studying or working in Budapest, looking for an outlet for their suppressed creativity. We throw a ball, the one holding it gets to speak about herself and her expectations of the class.

At the Flow class, it’s all about listening to your feelings and expressing them creatively – and establishing a compassionate connection to others’ feelings too. We choose our dominant feeling from a bunch of cards (I choose excitement), close our eyes and imagine what shape, color and smell our feeling would have. I imagine excitement to be star-shaped, in bright yellow, orange and red – I cut it out from paperboard and color it with crayons. Well, it’s not too pretty, but it shows excitement.

Listening to your own feelings is one thing, empathizing with someone else’s is another: the next task is about establishing compassionate connections. We randomly form pairs, exchange our feeling-cards and make small pieces of artworks from those, too.

The ultimate goal is to experience the flow, it’s the creative process that matters, not the outcome. Barbara is very conscious about that, so we never discuss the finished works –a big relief for me! As we work on I slowly get rid of feelings of having to measure up to expectations and creativity starts to flow easily.

As creativity is best not restricted to two dimensions, we get to do some other exercises as well. Again, the feeling of the moment is the starting point for all of us – how would you express it in one movement alone? We start to act out sentiments of calmness, curiosity and frustration – own feelings as well as feeling of the others in the group.

The next exercise is about finding the essence of things. The means? Lines. How would you express different sentiments with the help of a line, and one line only? We draw – lines, over and over again, most turn out to be long and complicated. Too complicated, so the task is to narrow it down. Which part of the line is most expressive concerning its subject? Again, we add a dimension and draw our lines with our hands in space.

My conclusion? I’d definitely recommend the Flow class to anyone who’d like to get in touch with their feelings, listening to what’s inside and express it creatively – without any pressure to create something ‘valuable’ in the aesthetical sense of the word. Although from time to time I found it a bit straining to concentrate on my temporary feelings throughout the whole course, time passed by very quickly and it was a rather refreshing way of spending it– connected and creative.

This February is a rather exciting time in my life! After successfully submiting my thesis two weeks ago, I am busy preparing my studio to welcome you, my new students. Beside this, I invest lots of time and energy walking around the city hanging posters and flyers in schools and public places. Last week I was very touched to receive a heart worming and supportive feedback from Funzine editor, who encourraged me to advertise ASB in their magazine. It seems that my efforts have already started to bring first fruit, as there are already several students waiting for the start of the courses.

Contemporary Art is Like a Language

I believe that contemporary art is like a language. It has its own vocabulary, grammar and syntax. It is possible to teach it and it is possible to learn it. Once one had learned how to speak and think in that language, he or she may also understand what people (artists) want to say and he or she may engage in a dialogue with them.

As it is the case with all languages, the language of contemporary art also allows different levels of communication. One may choose to express simple, even banal everyday things using this language, (something like: "Sweety, don't forget to throw out the garbage") but, on the other hand, one may also use it to communicate a complex set of thoughts and deep personal feelings. Those who speak it well can write poetry.

In my teaching experience, I have noticed that being able to understand, enjoy or make contemporary arts is not necessarily always connected to a knowledge of the 20th and 21st century art history. Expanding knowledge in art history could be helpful and refreshing, but in my opinion is not sufficient to make solid foundation for independent high quality creative expression of high quality. I realised that in order to be able to write poetry in the language of contemporary arts, one needs to know how to speak the language, how to think in that language and above all one needs to allow, sometimes even dare to be radically genuine about who and what he or she is.

It has been my deep desire to share the knowledge and the experience I have acquired during the years of studying, teaching, making and exhibiting art. I enjoy assisting others in their efforts to start using the language of contemporary art and supporting them to open up and explore the creative side of their personality. But above all I receive the most pleasure from watching my students grow in their independence and self confidence about their artistic expression.
